September was the month of team competitions. They came up in support more than anything else, so a lot of what follows is about them: a live standing for administrative team competitions, a club field that keeps what you pick, and a round switch that tells you what is in the way. Self service got a way in for riders without an FEI ID or email, and online.equipe.com got faster.

In case you missed them, four things got their own post this month: Unified start lists and team competitions on online.equipe.com, Archived shows come back faster, All our terms and policies, in one place and Equipe Online 5.5.

๐Ÿ† New features

The team standing on an administrative team competition (App)

An administrative team competition holds the teams, while the riders ride in the individual competitions. Its result page used to show only a note pointing to those competitions. It now shows the team standing, and it updates live as results come in. The team list also follows the discipline: no jumping columns over a working equitation speed test, and no empty phase columns over an eventing team.

Recalculating such a competition also re-ranked the individual competition behind it, which gave placings like 1, 3, 5, 7. That is fixed.

Self service for riders without an FEI ID or email (App and Online)

A rider could only connect to self service with an FEI ID or an email address. The show office can now give a rider a code that connects them to their own starts at that show. The connection stops when the show ends. A rider connected more than once is listed once.

Three more things in self service:

  • Payment requests to payers. With a new show setting, a rider can email every payer who still owes something with one click. Each payer gets their own self service link with the pay button. A payer is asked at most once an hour.
  • An empty day says why. No horses, no horse numbers, horses not on the master list, or horses listed with another rider.
  • The "to pay" badge updates as soon as the rider enters a competition, and it shows in the invoice header too.

All entries per day and arena (Entry)

Click an arena total on the schedule and you get every entry for that day and arena, with tabs for submitted, accepted, reserves and withdrawn, and one tab per arena. Entries are numbered in the order they came in, hovering shows when, and reserves can be handled right there. Every count on the page matches the schedule: an entry for two starts counts as two, and lists and extras stay out of the arena totals.

Fetch data into a start custom field (App)

The fetch data dialog can write into one specific custom field on the start, as long as the type fits. A saved fetch column that is no longer offered stays as it was. Before, a removed custom field was saved as the start order.

Score summaries (App and Online)

  • Eventing total penalty as a source. A score summary can read an eventing competition's total penalty, the same number the result list is ranked on. Eliminated and retired starts get the "did not complete" score, as in dressage. The method that used to be called percent summary is now "result in each competition".
  • A summary built on another summary recalculates on its own. It used to go stale online until someone touched it.
  • Teams on a score summary are published with their members and totals. Online showed only the team names.

The Score summary article was rewritten this month with new pictures.

โœจ Improvements

Teams and clubs

  • The club field keeps what you pick. The club field in the team dialog looked like free text, but what you typed was thrown away, and pressing Enter saved a team with no club under a green "team created". Club and payer are now proper pickers with logo or flag and a clear button. A club that is not in the register yet can be created from the picker.
  • Club logos can be dropped on the club form. Picking a rider from the federation no longer overwrites an uploaded club logo.

Rounds and jump-offs

  • The round switch says what is in the way. Switching to a round the judgement does not support used to crash or fail without a word. It now names the setting and the competition, including when the problem sits in the team competition that comes along.
  • A team decided over fewer rounds no longer blocks the individual jump-off. For example a team result after two rounds with an individual jump-off. The jump-off is held for the individual competition only, and a note explains it.
  • The last round can no longer be removed from the judgement, and when starts sit in a round that is gone, you get a button to go back to the first round.

Startlist AI

The parser that reads riders' start list wishes learned from the first shows that used it. A height next to a wish ("110 at the front") means the competition of that height. A wish can be stored for another rider, for example a parent writing for a child. A small typo in a horse name still finds the horse. German notes work, a competition number before the note limits the wish to that competition, and "not too early" is no longer read as "at the back". When the OpenAI key hits its per-minute limit, parsing waits and carries on instead of giving up, and "Parse missing notes" only sends the notes that have no result yet. The stronger model is now the default. It read every note in our test set correctly, and it costs a bit more on the organizer's own key. More about Startlist AI: A first version of Startlist AI.

Online

  • The start page shows custom fields and the cross country fence strip. Before, both only showed in the result list. Fences with faults are named and the codes are written out, since there is nothing to hover over on a phone.
  • Phone numbers and web addresses in the schedule are links. Tap to call.
  • Breaks stay on the schedule while the arena is busy. They used to disappear the moment the competition before them got its last result.
  • Faster pages. Visitors download only their own language, show logos load as WebP when you scroll to them, and the script no longer holds up the page. The download is about half of what it was.
  • Result group titles say "section" in your language, like "C Sec. B", instead of bare codes.
  • The Results page comes back where you left it instead of starting again from the top.
  • Drag and drop works on touch screens and in the app, for sections, score summary items and the schedule.
  • The self service link opens in your language.
  • The app's tabs and error screens follow the phone's language, and Android can fill in saved passwords.

App

  • Faster first load. The app used to download all eighteen languages. It now downloads yours, which takes the first load from about 1.85 MB to 1.03 MB.
  • Better on tablets. Sortable lists drag on touch screens, and the hover popovers for people, horses and starts open with a tap. Popovers are no longer cut off by dialogs, and menus close on Escape or a tap outside. Under the hood the old jQuery libraries are gone.
  • Abbreviations in horse names are in capitals. "Coridor jt z" becomes "Coridor JT Z" when a name is cleaned up.
  • Split invoice suggests family members. People with the same last name show up as one-click suggestions.
  • A combined training competition name includes the jumping height after the dressage test.
  • The judge app opens without a connection once it has been loaded.
  • The timetable shows the letter a judge actually judges from when an alias is used.

Entry

  • The payment reminder only goes to riders who have not paid. Riders who had just paid read it as a failed payment and sent the organizer proof.
  • Bank details have their own section on the payer form. They sat under Company, so private payers skipped them.
  • The setting to limit payment methods is gone. Stripe refuses methods the organizer has not activated, and that blocked every checkout for the show. Checkout now offers what the Stripe account has turned on.
  • Horse and rider notices are hidden on extras, not only the hors concours one.

This help site

The changelog is a feed now, grouped by month, with a short preview, links to the sections and filters per product, so one monthly update no longer fills five screens. The biggest releases sit in a band at the top, and you can react to a post without opening it.

๐Ÿ› Bug fixes

  • Online showed a white page on older iPhones. A change to the schedule links used something iOS before 16.4 does not support, and for a few days every page went white there, in the browser and in the app. That was our mistake, and we are sorry. It is fixed, and a check now stops that kind of code before it goes out.
  • Team competitions on a phone show results from the first rider. The narrow layout waited until a team had a total.
  • A dropped team result is struck through in show jumping too, not only in dressage.
  • A season standing made on online.equipe.com is no longer taken over by a show upload that has a competition with the same number.
  • Prize money stays put when categories are split or merged. A prize list paid over the whole field was handed out again in each category, so a category winner could jump from second to first prize.
  • Amounts below one show. Income and cost hid anything between -1 and 1, and printed results dropped prize money like 0.84 when a shared placing split the prize.
  • Paperless dressage and eventing. A scribe at another letter no longer removes an eventing dressage elimination. A scribe saving remarks after an eliminated, retired or disqualified ride is no longer asked for the missing marks, and that sheet shows as submitted and signed.
  • Do not compete on the rider declaration overview toggles with undo, like in the rider app. It failed without a word when the horse already had a withdrawn row.
  • Age split competitions no longer show a false red gap in check start times, and randomize spreads a rider's horses as far apart as the field allows when it is too small for the spacing asked for.
  • Peppol. Registration needs an IBAN, since invoices without one were rejected, and the cent lost to VAT rounding is put on an invoice line so nothing is left to pay.
  • An FEI export with nothing selected is stopped before it is sent, instead of coming back from the FEI with a confusing error.
  • Paperless sheets and invoice PDFs retry when the upload to online times out.
  • A long show name no longer pushes the economy report onto a blank first page.
  • Several error pages are gone: a judge alias with a space, sorting the start list by a hidden column, two people opening the same day or report at the same moment, and an eventing dressage test without a marking sheet.
  • Logos. SVG logos show and upload again, a new logo shows right away instead of the old "no logo" picture, and EPS files from CorelDRAW and Illustrator and very large PNGs render.
  • Entry. Saving an extra fee keeps its links to extras, so payers who bought them are still charged the fee. Refunds and other organizer actions always check that you organize the show. A checkout in a language Entry does not have falls back to the default instead of failing.

๐Ÿ“‹ Federations and privacy

  • The vaccination check date is sent back to the Norwegian federation.
  • Only the birth year is published from a personal identity number, never the full number.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What we're hearing

We read every question that comes in. This month four topics stood out.

  • Team competitions. By far the most asked this month, mostly about dressage teams: creating the team, a club that will not stick, placings that look wrong, a team competition that never finishes, and changing a team after it has ridden. The fixes at the top of this post came straight out of those questions, and we know the setup still asks too much of you.
  • Score summaries. Which method to use, how to combine two competitions into one result list, and tie breaks. The Score summary article is new. Tie breaks in score summaries were asked for, and we have written that down.
  • Sending results to the federation. Several organizers in Denmark got an error on one competition when exporting to DRF Go. Each time it was the ranking: a competition split after results were in and never recalculated, or a rider who skipped the jump-off marked as withdrawn instead of abstained. Withdrawn means the rider never started.
  • Paperless judging for the first time. More clubs tried paperless dressage at national shows. The questions were about the general impression field, changing a sheet after it was signed, and sending the protocol to both rider and entrant. Keep them coming, this is how paperless gets better.

Thank you for every question and every report. They are what this list is made of.
